PLN Will Supply Electricity to Medco E&P's Rimau Block

PLN and Medco hope that the synergy between the two can be expanded to other onshore work areas such as in South Sumatra, Aceh, and Tarakan and Bangkanai in Kalimantan. PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will supply electricity to support the operations of the Oil and Gas Working Area (WK Migas). Rimau, South Sumatra. The block is now operated by PT Medco E&P. This support was stated in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two parties on Thursday (28/1). PLN's Sumatra and Kalimantan Regional Business Director Adi Lumakso ensured that PLN was ready to maintain supply reliability to support the operations and production of the Rimau Block. Currently, the installed capacity of power plants in the Sumatran electricity system reaches 8,838 megawatts (MW) and the highest peak load reaches 6,421 MW with an electrical system reserve of 2,417 MW. Medco E&P, PLN will prepare two power grid sources. "We are confident that we can meet all of Medco's electricity needs with quality services," Adi said in a written statement, Friday (28/1). Adi hopes that the synergy between PLN and Medco E&P can soon be expanded to cover all the needs of the Rimau Block so that the existing pumps that have been installed mapped together can be fully supplied by PLN. Even for Medco E&P's other onshore operational assets, PLN can prepare a technical mapping to support a sustainable electricity supply for Medco E&P Indonesia. such as in South Sumatra, Aceh, Tarakan, and Bangkanai," said Adi. In addition to electricity supply, to meet the green energy issue that exists at Medco E&P, PLN has a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) service which is an attribute that represents every MWh of electricity produced from EBT plants. "We think this will be a strategic synergy project. for mutual progress," he said. Senior VP Onshore Asset Medco E&P Imron Gazali appreciated PLN's support in providing electricity for the operational needs of Medco E&P Indonesia's working area, particularly in South Sumatra. wider gap between PLN and Medco E&P. "With this MoU, we hope it can continue in our other areas of operation," said Imron. Imron added that the supply of electricity in the upstream oil and gas sector is very critical. Medco E&P requires electricity that is reliable in terms of quality and quantity and is competitive. Currently, Medco has utilized electricity supply from PLN for the Sampang Work Area, East Java. From this experience, Medco E&P has been able to increase efficiency. Not only that, Imron also believes that the use of electricity from PLN will support Medco E&P's efforts to mitigate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. "Medco has set a Net Zero Carbon target for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2050 and Scope 3 by 2060," he said. PT Medco E&P Rimau is a subsidiary of PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MEDC) in the upstream oil and gas sector. The company has obtained the right to extend the management of the Rimau Block, South Sumatra in 2019. Medco has a 95% share and a regional mining and energy company 5%, meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Medco will trial the Open Pit Method in the Rimau Block, Balitbang, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and Medco Energi will use the open pit method to produce potential new oil reserves in the Rimau Block. Head of the Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana, said that the government and Medco Energi Internasional will test the open pit method in the Rimau Block, South Sumatra. This method was chosen to produce potential oil reserves from the block. The discovery of oil reserves in the Rimau Block, said Dadan, cannot be produced using the usual method because it is quite shallow. Therefore, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif assigned Lemigas through Balitbang and Medco as the operator of the Rimau Block to use the open pit method in the block. Through the open-pit method, Lemigas will dredge rock from the location of the discovery of oil reserves. Later the rock is extracted to produce oil. Amigas is also preparing to test the method. "Now in the process of preparation in the laboratory.
