Thousands of Balinese people spill over when Pelebon Raja is sacked, XI

Pelebon Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI with the highest level Pratiwa Nyawa Ngasti Wedana was held on Friday (21/1) and went smoothly. At around 12.00 WITA, Bade overlapped his solas walking towards Setra Badung. Thousands of people follow this procession.

In front of the majestic bade weighing 2 tons, accompanying white oxen and in front of him walking the ogoh-ogoh Cupak with a violent face tucked in a whip behind his shovel.

The location of Puri Pemecutan with Setra Badung is not too far away, approximately 200 meters. However, the majesty of the bade and the convoy from the Puri Pemecutan family and the community made the journey take quite a while. Arriving at Setra Badung, Layon Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI was lowered to the location of the burning. At approximately 16.00 WITA, Ida Cokorda's cremation was finished. After that, Ida Cokorda's ashes were transported to Melasti Beach in Kuta, Badung. That's a little picture of the pelebon ceremony of one of the famous kings in Bali. The series of ceremonies also lasted quite a long time. Starting on January 2, 2021, until the peak on January 21 yesterday.

Before holding the title Ida Cokorda, her welaka name was AA Ngurah Manik Parasara. Then in 1989, on July 16, 1989, to be exact, AA Ngurah Manik Parasara mabiseka or was crowned king with the title Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI, replacing his father Ida Cokorda Pemecutan X which was wide on March 17, 1986. That is, it has been 32 years since AA Ngurah Manik Parasara or Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI has become the top wargi of the Puri Pemecutan gang. Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI himself died at the age of 76 years in December 2021. The King of Pemecutan who was born on April 17, 1945, was diagnosed with death due to complications from heart disease, gout, and diabetes. Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI left a wife, namely AA Ayu Suryaningsih, with four sons and daughters namely AA Sagung Ratna, AA Ngurah Damar Negara, AA Mas Indah Sari, and AA Ngurah Kerthagama, and 12 grandchildren.

Regarding his career in the government arena, Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI served as Chair of the Badung DPRD for the period 1977-1982. Then a Member of the Bali Provincial DPRD for the 1987-1992 period and a Member of the RI Golkar Faction from 1992-1997. Ida Cokorda Pemecutan XI is also considered an elder of the Golkar Party and is considered a figure who founded the Bali Golkar Party for the period 1969-1973. For a career in customs and culture, Ida Cokorda Pemecutan assumed the task of Tedung Jagat Denpasar. In addition, during her lifetime, Ida Cokorda often attended Muslim activities in Bali, especially residents of the Kepaon Muslim Village and the Bugis Muslim Village in Serangan. This is also inseparable from the previous history where Puri Pemecutan has close links with the two Islamic villages.

The meaning of Palebon, the Tradition of Burning the Bodies of Nobles in Bali, The palebon ceremony (Pelebohn) of a sulinggih from Griya Jro Gede Sanur, Ida Pedanda Nabe Gede Dwija Ngenjung, attracted public attention on October 8, 2021. People flocked to follow the pelebon procession to pay their last respects to the pioneers of tourism in the Sanur area, Denpasar City.

The pelebon and cremation traditions look the same, but the facts are different. Even though they both carry out the cremation procession in Bali, they both have some differences. The following is a list of pelebons in Bali:

1. Pelebon is a funeral ceremony for the Brahmins or Balinese knights

The term pelebon ceremony is usually applied to the procession of burning the bodies of certain people, such as those from the brahmanas and knights in Bali. The Brahmin in question is a sulinggih, while the knight is a nobleman or a Balinese purist.

The pelebon ceremony is usually held larger than the usual cremation, although both are carried out with preparations that take a long time.

The other most famous Pelebon is his consort, King Klungkung Ida I Dewa Agung Oka Geg (the last Klungkung king to be appointed by the Dutch, and died in 1965), Ida I Dewa Agung Istri Putra, in 2014.

The pelebon uses the facilities of Lembu, Naga Banda, and Bade Tumpang Sawelas (a funeral tower with 11 stories roofs) as high as 28 meters and weighing about 7 tons. As many as 350 people lifted the bade in one round with a distance of 100 meters. This pelebon involved thousands of Klungkung people, who spilled over to the streets of Semarapura City. People from all over Bali also came to pay their last respects to the empress.

The body is usually buried in the funeral home (Griya) since he died until the pelebon ceremony. As long as it is buried at home, it is usually given certain treats byfamily as if the deceased was still alive.

As for the Ngaben ceremony, usually what is burned is the skeleton of a corpse that had previously been buried for a certain period.

Almost the same as Ngaben, the pelebon ceremony begins with determining a good day for the ceremony. The name of the term is work nuasen, to request the ceremony to run smoothly on a scale and no basis.

Then proceed with various other processions such as bathing the corpse, transferring it to a big bale, and other processions that last for weeks.

3. Attendance Another procession that sometimes differentiates between pelebon and cremation is the presence of ceremonial facilities in the form of Naga Banda.

Naga Banda will be placed side by side with the corpse. Naga Banda's head is towards Kelod-Kauh (Southwest), and its tail is towards Kaja Kangin (Northeast). At the peak of the pelebon event, the Banda Naga will symbolically be arrowed by a sulinggih who leads the ceremony. Then Naga Banda accompanied the corpse to the setra (grave).

While heading to this setra, the corpse is carried on the bade. Arriving at the setra, the body was moved to a petulangan in the form of an ox ride. For the Brahmins, usually, the ox is made white. While the knights, usually black. Once inside the box, the body is burned.

After the cremation process is complete, it is continued with the nuduk galih ceremony or collecting the remains of the bones for the ceremony. The remaining bones are then thrown into the sea or river.

The pelebon ritual is very grand and involves the participation of thousands of people. This process is quite rare. That's why it is often the target of tourists when on vacation to Bali. A Naga Banda is the most typical of the pelebon ceremony,
